1635 | The first occupant: Reynier Pauw

17th century vault in the basementThe house at 3 Korte Vijverberg was built for Reynier Pauw and his second wife, the rich widow Stijnte van Ruytenburch. In 1635, together with their children from previous marriages, they moved into the house, which has also been known as Pauw House since that time. Reynier’s son, Diederik, married Stijntje’s daughter, Alida, and the couple had two sons. After Alida’s death at the age of 25, Diederik married the widow Elisabeth Cats, daughter of the poet Jacob Cats. Reynier died in 1676, leaving most of his estate to the sons of Diederik and Alida, the elder of whom, also called Reynier Pauw, inherited the house. When he died in 1693, the house passed to his brother Joan.
