1633 | Building Korte Vijverberg

Korte VijverbergKorte Vijverberg was built on the grounds of The Hague’s civic guard, St. Sebastian. This fact is reflected in the name of nearby Doelenstraat, doelen being the Dutch for ‘target range’. Because of the rapid development of the city in the 1730s, a connection was needed between the Plein and Voorhout. The grounds of the St. Sebastian target range were divided up into lots, and lot number 3 was purchased by Reynier Pauw, a member of the Supreme Court of Holland and Zeeland. The Pauw family, one of the most powerful in the Republic, belonged to the regent class, which had considerable influence in the cities. Of all the houses built on Korte Vijverberg at that time, number 3 is the only one that still has seventeenth-century elements in its façade.
